What is DesignerX?
DesignerX is a free, browser-based 3D design tool from 3DBuildX in Cambridge, Ontario. It turns text, SVG artwork, QR codes and shapes into ready-to-make models. It exports 3 file formats (STL, 3MF and OBJ), includes 40+ fonts and 12 plate shapes, and runs in any modern browser with nothing to install. It costs $0 to use.
DesignerX at a glance: 3 export formats · 40+ fonts · 12 plate shapes · 6 things to make · 13 service areas · free to use
What can you make with DesignerX?
You can make 6 kinds of items: name plates, review plates, keychains, QR code plates, lithophane lamps and, soon, light boxes. A review plate face is 150 × 220 mm by default. A keychain starts at 75 × 25 mm. A QR code should be at least 25 mm wide so phones can scan it. Each item is free to design.
- Name plates and keychains with your own text, fonts and borders
- Review-plate signs that come out as two separate pieces: a face and a stand
- QR code plates that link to a website, a Wi-Fi network or a contact card
- Backlit lithophanes made from your photos
How does DesignerX compare with CAD software?
DesignerX is faster for simple custom items. General CAD software is better for precise mechanical parts.
| DesignerX | General CAD software | |
|---|---|---|
| Install | None. It runs in the browser. | Usually required. |
| Cost | $0 to use. | Free to paid, depending on the tool. |
| Best for | Text, plates, tags, signs and lithophanes. | Mechanical parts and engineering designs. |
| Learning time | Minutes: type text and pick a shape. | Typically hours to weeks. |
However, DesignerX is not a replacement for CAD when you need exact tolerances on a moving part. It trades some flexibility for speed and simplicity.
Which file format should you choose?
Choose 3MF when you want colours. A 3MF file stores several colours in one file and opens in Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer and PrusaSlicer. Choose STL for the widest support. The STL format has been in use since 1987, so almost every slicer reads it. OBJ is also available. DesignerX exports all 3, so you can pick whichever your slicer likes best.
Common questions
Is DesignerX free?
Yes. DesignerX costs $0 to use. A free account lets you save your designs and open them later from any browser. You can choose from 40+ fonts and 12 plate shapes, add a QR code or a logo, and export 3 file formats. There is nothing to install, because the designer runs in the browser. If you would rather not make the item yourself, 3DBuildX can make it for you.
What machine do I need?
Any FDM 3D printer works. You export an STL, 3MF or OBJ file, open it in your slicer, and send it to the machine. Choose 3MF when you want several colours in one file. A review plate comes out as 2 separate pieces, a face and a stand, and a QR code should be at least 25 mm wide so phones can scan it. If you do not own a machine, you can bring the file to us.

Who builds DesignerX?
The founder of 3DBuildX is a software engineer with 15 years of experience in IT and 8 years of hands-on experience in 3D printing and CAD design. DesignerX combines both skills: 15 years of building software, and 8 years of learning what makes a 3D print succeed or fail. The tool is made to avoid the common problems, such as parts that need supports, walls that are too thin and files that will not open in a slicer.
